Own a Lovely Fetish Carving by Bernard Laiwakete
Hand hewn from Banded Cream Travertine
This piece measures 2-1/2" Long by 1-3/8" High
Inlaid with turquoise heartline and turquoise eyes
Bernard is from a large family of Zuni Artisans
The bottom is signed with his initials and tribe affiliation
Fetishes inlaid with a heart line starts at the mouth since breath is the living spirit. They end at the soul which is where faith, spirit and inner strength are held.
Many Native Americans believe their fetishes need special care - that the fetish should be offered corn meal and given great admiration as befits its great spirit and purpose. The better it is treated the better it will perform is the central belief.
The Ram represent increasing self worth and an increase in herds
