THIS TOTEM POLE WAS CARVED SPECIALLY FOR A TLINGIT NATIVE AMERICAN TO HONOR HIS FAMILY AND THE STORIES PASSED DOWN FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION
FOR SEVERAL HUNDRED YEARS
THIS DOES NOT FALL UNDER THE ANTIQUITIES ACT. THE HARSH ALASKAN CLIMATE AND ELEMENTS HAVE BEEN HARD ON THIS TOTEM POLE AS IT WAS DISPLAYED OUTSIDE FOR MANY YEARS. THE EAGLE'S BEAK AND PART OF ITS EYE ARE MISSING, AND THE WINGS ARE DETACHABLE. THE WHALES FIN IS LOOSE. THE WOOD HAS LONG STRESS CRACKS AND CHIPS AND IS VERY DRY AND THE PAINT IS FADED AND CHIPPED. THIS WAS RAISED ON JUNE 27 1970 IN KETCHIKAN ALASKA, I DO NOT KNOW WHEN IT WAS CARVED AS IT PROBABLY TOOK SEVERAL YEARS TO CARVE SUCH A LARGE TOTEM POLE. THERE IS A PAPER PRINT OUT FROM THE FORMER TLINGIT OWNER OF THE TOTEM POLE EXPLAINING THE MEANING IN STORY FORM OF WHAT SOME OF THE FIGURES ON THE TOTEM POLE REPRESENT. THERE IS A STORY EACH FOR THE BEAR, THE EAGLE, THE BROTHERS AND THE WHALE. ALSO MENTIONED IN THE PRINTOUT VERIFYING THE STORIES ARE THE TLINGIT ELDER NAMES OF FORREST DEWITT SR., THE LATE ADAMS JAMES 1877-1960 AND TOM UKAS A TLINGIT OF WRANGELL.
