A fetish is an object that is to be treated with reverence and respect, for within it. dwells a powerful spirit. In the Zuni language, a fetish is called a wemawe. The Zuni, whose pueblo is in the northwest corner of New Mexico, are renowned for their fetishes, primarily of animals. Fetishes are objects to be venerated for their powers to protect, heal and overcome. The traits in these animals are often ones we can summon, or aspired to in ourselves. The spirits of these creatures have the power to assist us in different ways. A traveler, for instance, might carry the fetish of a mountain lion, powerful, resourceful, independent - for protection while hunters would carry the fetish of a mountain lion for success in their pursuits.
Edwin Begay worked at many industrial trades before finding his true path in stone carving. He studied with some of the best carvers in the southwest.
This gorgeous little buffalo is made of serpentine and turquoise, with a quail feather and heishi prayer bundle.
