This beautiful somewhat abstract carving is a mystery on 2 levels. I do not know who the carver is, though it has been suggested possibly one of the Ohmsatties related to Saul Yuselew. The second mystery is the turquoise. This turquoise ranges from bright apple green to almost yellow in color and has a lovely spiderwebbing of brown pebbled matrix. This coloring most commonly hails from the Nevada mines of the Shoshone mountains, the most famous being Carico Lake. I don't have a way of proving it, you often cannot if the provenance has been lost, but it is true that in the 60's and 70's, turquoise that was green was often tossed out as waste since only the blue was valued. Is this Carico Lake turquoise? I cannot say for sure, but it is definitely a truly lovely and unusual piece of green turquoise that is beautiful in it's own right regardless of origin. I have gone down the rabbit hole and watched a number of fascinating documentaries about turquoise mines of the southwest because of this bear, which has been really wonderful as well. I will say, I have never seen anything to convince me it's NOT Carico Lake.Unknown Vintage Turquoise Carving Zuni Fetish.
