    Description

    In brief
Large, colorful and strikingly beautiful wolf fetish
    Length is 4 1/2 inches; height: 2 1/2 inches
Carving is made of highly polished pink marble with sparkly flecks of quartz and perhaps pyrite
"Arrowhead" in bundle is also quartz; other stones and shells are spiny oyster, red coral, turquoise, jet, and a section of spiral-shaped conus shell
Darker area at tip of stone makes a perfect nose (see photo 10)
    Jet inlay eyes
Note color changes of materials in various lighting
Carving is intriguing, attractive and colorful from all angles; shows well in a display of fetishes
Signed with artist's stylized initials, AA, on the bottom
Andy Abeita is from Isleta Pueblo, NM
This elegant and colorful wolf fetish carving would be an eye-catching central figure in a display of fetishes. At 4 1/2 inches long from tip to tip, it's large. The bundle is made of a particularly varied assortment of materials, offering lots of color and appealing textures. And the beautiful marble has flecks of mica and (I think) a few bits of pyrite, which add a wonderful sparkle to the rich rose-colored stone. We also like the way Andy Abeita found a dark spot in the stone at what became the front of the carving and made it the wolf's nose. A finely shaped, small mouth and tiny nostrils complete the face. Another distinction of this carving is its shape, which is intriguing from all angles. You can see this in the photos.
This stone was a challenge to photograph. The light-colored areas appear to be quartz, and many of the smaller spots are sparkly mica, but in the photos they show only as whitish flecks in the marble. So seeing the actual fetish can only increase your appreciation of it. It's a beauty!
It's worth mentioning that Zuni is the most famous for its fetishes, but all Pueblos produce them, and so do Navajos. In all cases, it's a long tradition, not something artists started doing for the tourist trade. This carving is from Isleta Pueblo, the southernmost of the Rio Grande Pueblos, located a few miles south of Albuquerque. Andy Abeita, assisted by his wife, Roberta, has been making fine carvings there for quite a long time now. We've had his work, and Roberta's, in our store for over 20 years.
Because of the weight of the marble, combined with the delicate feathers, this carving will be carefully bubble-wrapped and packed in a sturdy box for shipping.

    Who we are
Canyon Echoes Gallery is an eBay store that sells excellent Native American jewelry and fetish carvings and strives to provide equally good customer service. We deal in
    genuine
American Indian goods, including new and vintage/antique items. Most come from either the artists themselves, reservation trading posts, or veteran dealers with impeccable credentials.
Almost every piece of Native American art offers insight into the culture behind it. Sometimes you can see it right away; other times it's more subtle. But you'll never find that special quality in a cheap imitation. That's why we're so particular about what we sell...and have been since 1995. We think we have some of the best Indian material on eBay and hope you think so, too.
