    Description

The Zuni Indians are a pueblo tribe from western New Mexico who have inhabited that region since at least 1100 AD.  Zuni fetishes are hand carved pieces of natural materials, depicting animals or other symbols of the Zuni connection to nature and all that is.  These fine carvings have many uses: for trade, religious ceremonial use, luck in hunting, ensuring rain, enhancing fertility and propagation, diagnosing and curing disease, or any area of their lives where they feel help is needed
Jayne and Lynn Quam are a dynamic fetish carving duo.  Jayne, a Navajo from Monument Valley, is married to Lynn, a Zuni Native.  Together they have been creating carvings for over 40 years.  They live in Zuni, New Mexico, surrounded by family.  Lynn learned his craft from his late mother, Annie Quam Gasper, a highly collected and respected Zuni jewelry maker and stone fetish carver.  They, in turn, taught Jayne the art.  Jayne began as a helper to her mother-in-law.  As the elder's eyes failed, she eventually and confidently began creating her own style of fetish carving.  She is famous for her doubled fetishes, as well as the Zuni Six Direction Fetish.  For the past forty years Lynn and Jayne traveled the world selling their award winning fetishes.  Nowadays you will find them closer to home where they help raise their grandchildren and continue to honor their culture by teaching others their traditions.
The gemstone known as jet is a mineraloid and type of lignite that takes a beautiful polish. Jet is actually derived from decaying wood that undergoes extreme pressure and heat. The wood then becomes fossilized as a compact black material.   Jet is lightweight whereas black onyx is heavy.
