Description:
This is an adorable Avanyu or water serpent fetish by Russell Shack. He is made of shiny black marble with etching for design. His eyes bulge and have turquoise inlaid pupils. He has a plumed collar and his body in=s zig-zagged to imitate water flow or lightening. He is signed Russell Shack Zuni. Avanyu was a kind, but fearful, deity and was the bringer of storms and guardian of water.
Many people collect fetishes today due to the diversity of the Zuni artisans and the meanings associated with them. Also the beauty of the stones used, which are often incorporated into the design of the animal. They are small sculptures with spiritual meaning and are portable and evoke emotion when held and viewed.
